Top Reasons For Visiting Dubrovnik

 Lisa     22:26     Travel     No comments

Dubrovnik is an ancient city located at the South of Croatia, on the shore of the Adriatic Sea. The city has a population of almost 45,000 and in recent years has become an attractive touristic attraction. It's a place with long and deep history which can be read on each cornerstone of the city.  Dubrovnik's development began in the 7th Century, once the Romans arrived in this area. After that, the city continued to grow rapidly, and a lot of architectural wonders are a living proof of that. Today, Dubrovnik impresses with its amazing natural landscapes, ancient vestiges and modern constructions at the same time. The city is visited every year by thousands of tourists, from all around the world. If you want to do that as well, there are some places that you really shouldn't miss while in Dubrovnik.

Taking A Stroll Through The Old Town

The Old Town of Dubrovnik is without any doubt, the most iconic and representative place of the entire city. It's not very vast and you can easily cross it by foot. The Old Town provides a mystical atmosphere and makes you feel like you're in a fairy tale or some ancient land. The imposing cold walls are still guarding the city, and will make you feel safe, even though the wars in this part of Europe ended long ago. At the end of the Old Town, you can pass through the Pile Gate, which is also the main city entrance. Near the Pile Gate, you will notice the Minceta Fortress, which is actually open for the public. Weather you are interested in medieval architecture or not, it's a site that shouldn't be missed. While up there, you can admire an impressive landscape of Dubrovnik and have a clear view over its surroundings.

Visiting Game Of Thrones Filming Locations

In case you didn't know that yet, Game of Thrones, one of the most popular TV shows today, is partially filmed here, as King's Landing is successfully portrayed by the city of Dubrovnik. The sets are actually live locations, and there are numerous city tours, in which you can see them all. You will have the chance to see places like The Red Keep, House Of The Undying, Blackwater Bay among many others. These organized tours include skilled guides, which will explain you everything you need to know. But it's much more fun to just wander around the city and try to figure out on your own where each scene was filmed.

Sailing To The Lokrum Island

Whenever you take a look on the azure Adriatic Sea, lush green island called Lokrum is hard to miss. Island is located just 600 meters away from mainland and it's a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike. Lokrum is a natural reservation, and like everywhere else it's also rich with historical vestiges. The Benedictine monastery complex is one of them. Built in a Romanesque-Gothic style, this historical complex lures visitors with its unique style and grandness. Aside from that, Lokrum is a great place for taking a break from urban life of Dubrovnik and for finding your inner-peace among its lush and preserved nature. The cars are not allowed here, so the only sounds you'll hear are the bird's chirp.

Witnessing The Unconquered City

Dubrovnik has held a flattering moniker of The Unconquered City for centuries. And witnessing its protective walls from the outside, from the perspective of the enemy is something that shouldn't be missed. This is possible if you decide use some of rent a yacht services around the harbor area. If you aren't experienced in sailing yourself, you can opt for guided tour as well. The Old City Walls are even more impressive from the outside. Obstacle of this size is hard to overcome even in our modern age. And in the past, such task was nearly impossible. Still, if medieval fort architecture is not your cup of tea, you can always just enjoy in sailing around this impressive city and always inviting blue Adriatic Sea.
